Tribute to bus drivers

March 4, 2016

“Appreciation is a wonderful thing. It makes what is excellent in others belong to us as well” – Voltaire

I get up at early hours and at times drive through the night to get you to where you need to be safely. Driving a bus isn’t an easy thing. Those are big vehicles which I must manoeuvre on busy roads. During those hours I have your lives in my hands. If something happens, I have blood on my hands. Yes, it is not the easiest thing to drive a bus.

I have people shouting at me, complaining, and people thanking me but not too often though. Every once in a while I get a smile which makes me feel like my job is worth it after all. Maybe I am doing a good job.

Although the bus is filled with people, my bus is the only company I have really. With all the cheerful chatting and noise, all I hear is the grumbling of my bus. That being said, my loyal bus sometimes breaks down since it has to work twice as hard as me. So, please be patient and try to understand. All I can do is wait with you for the mechanic to arrive.

I love being on the road. I get to see the country, all the way from Cape Town to Durban, from Zambia to Zimbabwe. It turns into a sort of adventure. Every time I park my bus and I watch people disembark I feel proud, another load of people who have arrived safely and on time.

I would like to thank you for being a passenger on my bus. For placing your trust in me to get you to where you need to be. For providing me with a job and putting food on my table. My wife and kids thank you to.

“Some years ago there was a study to discover the most stressful occupation. It turned out not to be the head of a large business, football manager or prime minister, but rather: bus driver.” – Jonathan Sacks.

We, here at Greyhound, would like to express our gratitude to all bus drivers not only driving Greyhound busses but school busses and those of other companies as well. Without you, Greyhound would not exist.

7 Travel Tips for First Time Travelers

May 5, 2015

Starting something off on the right foot can make your trip and end results so much better, yet many people find that when things do not go as planned, it can ruin everything. Here are some things you can do to plan ahead for your next travel experience.

If you are a first time traveler, you may find these helpful:

  1. Be open to learning new things. Travel can be a great deal of fun but you will experience new and different things. Some people find this creates anxiety because they’re not expecting it. So be prepared and be open to the new experiences.
  2. Get cheap bus tickets when you purchase in advance. Use Greyhound bookings and plan your travels in advance and you can save a great deal of cash on your tickets.
  3. Learn the basics of the language. If you’re traveling someplace that speaks a different language, take the time to learn the basics. You don’t have to be fluent but it will help to have a background of understanding.
  4. Travel in a style that suits your values and interests. Don’t worry about what other people say about where and how you should travel. If you want to take a bush around the continental US, then go for it. Whatever you want, this experience is yours alone.
  5. Try some street food. This is a great way to experience the unique cultures of other areas. Don’t be afraid to try the street food.
  6. Pack lightly. Far too often, people are over-prepared and they pack too much stuff. This is an even bigger problem if you make purchases, like souvenirs while you are there. You’ll have to haul a bunch of stuff back with you that you might not have room for.
  7. Practice festive safety season and know where you are and when, if traveling during the holidays. Have fun but get back home safely.

If you are planning your first travel soon, Greyhound bookings can help you find cheap bus tickets to your destination.
